As a Virginia wedding photographer, We’ve had the joy of exploring so many beautiful corners of this state. Every venue has its own personality, every season feels different, and every couple brings a story that’s uniquely theirs. That’s honestly one of my favorite parts of this job.

Choose a Venue That Feels Like You
One of my favorite things about Virginia is just how many different wedding styles you can pull off without ever leaving the state.
Love the mountains? You’ve got endless overlooks and cozy lodges.
Dreaming of a vineyard wedding? Virginia has some of the most beautiful wineries on the East Coast.
Want something timeless and elegant? Historic estates and manor homes are everywhere.
Wedding at the beach? Totally got ya covered.
No matter your vision, there’s probably a venue that fits it perfectly.

One little piece of advice?
Visit your venue during the same season you’ll actually be getting married if you can! This is an important one! A venue in October looks completely different than it does in April, and seeing it in person helps you picture your day so much better.
Let’s Talk Budget (Because I Know You’re Wondering)
One of the first questions couples ask is, “How much does a Virginia wedding actually cost?”
The truth is… it depends.
A wedding in Northern Virginia will probably have a different price tag than one tucked away in the mountains of Southwest Virginia.
Don’t let those numbers overwhelm you.
Your wedding doesn’t have to look like someone else’s to be beautiful. Decide what matters most to you as a couple, then build your budget around those priorities!
For example:
Maybe photography is a top priority, but you don’t care as much about flowers!
Maybe you want a fantastic planner so that everything flows beautifully, but you won’t have a lot of music so the DJ isn’t as important.
Your priorities will help you plan your budget!
Add a Little Virginia Charm
One of the easiest ways to make your wedding feel personal is by embracing the place you’re getting married.
Think about serving local wine during cocktail hour, featuring farm-to-table catering, hiring a local acoustic musician, or incorporating seasonal flowers grown nearby.
Those little details make your wedding feel intentional, and your guests will remember them long after the day is over.
What Time of Year Should You Get Married?
Honestly… Virginia is beautiful year-round.
Spring
Everything starts blooming, the mountains turn bright green again, and the weather is usually mild. Just have a backup plan in case Mother Nature decides to surprise everyone with a spring shower.
Summer
Long evenings, lush landscapes, and beautiful sunsets make summer weddings so much fun. Just make sure guests have plenty of shade and water if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony.
Fall
This one deserves its own paragraph.
Fall in Virginia is absolutely unreal.
The Blue Ridge Mountains turn every shade of gold, orange, and red, and the scenery almost doesn’t look real. It’s easily one of the busiest wedding seasons here, and once you see it, you’ll understand why.
Winter
If you’re dreaming of candlelight, fireplaces, cozy receptions, and maybe even a little snow, winter weddings can be incredibly romantic.
Personally, my favorite months to photograph weddings are May, early June, late September, and October.
The weather is comfortable, the light is beautiful, and Virginia really shows off during those months.
Hire Vendors Who Actually Know Virginia
This might be one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you.
Hire local whenever you can.
Your florist knows what’s in season!
Your planner probably knows your venue better than anyone. Guaranteed.
Your DJ has worked there dozens of times.
And your photographer?
They know where the sun sets, where the prettiest portrait locations are, and exactly what to do when Virginia decides to give you sunshine, clouds, and rain… all within the same afternoon! They can make recommendations on most vendors as well.
Working with vendors who know the area makes everything feel smoother and a whole lot less stressful.
Please Build Sunset Into Your Timeline
If I could give every couple one photography tip, it would be this.
Save fifteen or twenty minutes around sunset.
Seriously.
Those few minutes become some of the calmest moments of your entire wedding day.
You’ll finally get to step away together, take a deep breath, realize you’re officially married, and soak it all in.
Oh… and the photos?
They’re almost always favorites.
Don’t Forget About Travel Time
Virginia is full of winding mountain roads, scenic overlooks, and beautiful backroads.
They’re gorgeous.
They’re also slower than Google Maps sometimes thinks they are.
If you’re traveling between locations, build in a little extra time. Trust me, you’ll never regret having a relaxed timeline.
Planning an Outdoor Wedding?
Virginia’s scenery is one of the biggest reasons couples choose to get married here.
If you’re planning portraits or an elopement in places like Shenandoah National Park or Grayson Highlands, make sure to check if permits are required before your wedding day.
And even if the weather forecast looks perfect…
Always have a backup plan. Always. Always…. ALWAYS!
Virginia weather likes to keep us on our toes. Gotta love a state where you can experience all four seasons in one day.
Make It a Weekend Your Guests Will Love
If people are traveling to Virginia for your wedding, help them enjoy the area while they’re here.
Recommend your favorite coffee shop.
Share a few hiking trails.
Point them toward a local winery or brewery.
Create a little welcome guide with restaurants, things to do, and places to explore.
Those thoughtful touches make your wedding feel like an experience instead of just an event.

Wondering what a wedding day usually looks like?
Here’s a simple example.
1:00 PM — Getting Ready

Every wedding is different, but having a relaxed timeline makes such a huge difference.
A Few Questions I Get All the Time
When should we book our photographer?
If you have a spring or fall wedding, I’d recommend booking 12 to 18 months in advance if possible! You guys have been booking really late, and I’ll be honest, that makes me nervous! I don’t want you to miss out on a date with us because you waited!
Should we hire a wedding planner?
If your budget allows, absolutely. They take so much stress off your shoulders and let you actually enjoy your day!
What if it rains?
Some of my favorite wedding galleries have happened on rainy days. Rain doesn’t ruin weddings. It just makes the story a little different. But, don’t forget the back up plan! It’s great to choose a venue that has both indoor and outdoor options. Be sure to ask your photographer if those options photograph well!
At the End of the Day…
Pinterest is amazing.
Instagram is inspiring.
But your wedding doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
The best weddings I’ve photographed weren’t the ones with the biggest budgets or the fanciest decorations.
They were the ones where the couple was completely present.
Laughing.
Crying.
Hugging their people.
Soaking in every moment.
That’s what you’ll remember twenty years from now.
Not whether the napkins matched the flowers.
Your wedding is about marrying your favorite person.
Everything else is just the icing on the cake.
