There are so many Year in the Life photo session ideas that come to mind when families and I are dreaming up visions and planning for our year together! The truth is, your everyday life is already filled with stories worth remembering, so it’s easy to overlook the mundane as something that isn’t magical enough to photograph, but trust me, it really is! These sessions aren’t about the perfect setting or looking perfect; they’re about capturing what’s real, honest, and uniquely yours! So if you’re curious what that might look like across the seasons, here are some down-to-earth, meaningful year in the life photo session ideas to spark inspiration!
Outdoor Year in the Life Photo Session Ideas

Exploring a Garden
A slow walk through a flower garden: pointing out blooms, touching leaves, maybe spotting a butterfly or two, makes for a beautiful mix of curiosity and connection.
Location: A local botanical garden, landscaped park, or even your own flower beds.
Planting Flowers Together
Whether it’s a family project or just a mama and littles with tiny hands, planting in the yard is such a tender way to capture togetherness. Dirt on hands, messy clothes… worth remembering.
Location: Your home garden or a friend’s space.
Reading Under a Tree
This one is slow and calm. Lay out a quilt, bring a few well-loved books, and cuddle under a shady tree.
Location: A quiet backyard, park, or grassy area near home.
A Family Picnic
Eating outdoors is always a good idea. Toss some snacks in a basket, spread a blanket, and let the moments unfold naturally.
Location: A park, hillside, or tucked-away spot where the kids can roam.
Sketching or Journaling in Nature
This is especially sweet for kids who love to draw or notice small details. Bring some simple supplies and settle in.
Location: Open fields or nature trails where you can pause and observe.
Flying Kites or Blowing Bubbles
Nothing staged: just movement, play, and laughter. These sessions would feel light and free!
Location: A breezy field or school playground.
Family Hike and Nature Treasures
Head out for a walk and gather what catches your eye: leaves, sticks, rocks, acorns. I’ll capture the adventure. I’ve had this one bouncing around in my brain for a while and I can’t wait to photograph it!
Location: A wooded trail, park path, or local forest edge.
Creek Play & Rock Skipping
Wading in cool water, stacking stones, splashing in rubber boots: this one’s a childhood classic.
Location: A safe, shallow creek like the one in Bluefield City Park.
Bird Watching
For families who love to learn and look, this is a quiet and lovely way to document discovery together.
Location: Trails, parks, or even your own backyard if it attracts feathered friends.
Wildflower Crown Making
Pick safe blooms and make simple crowns or chains. It’s a slow and meaningful activity- perfect for moms and daughters, but dads and bros are not excluded!
Location: Wildflower patches or blooming fields in late spring or early summer.
Family Bike Ride or Scooter Adventure
If your family loves to move, this is a great way to keep things natural and active. My kids LOVE scootering, so I may be planning a little of this in one of our own YITL sessions this year!
Location: Paved trails, neighborhood sidewalks, or open parks with space to roam.
Cozy Indoor Moments

Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen right at home. These sessions are peaceful, slow, and centered around what life actually looks like in your space! Saturday mornings are a FAVE over here at the Lawson house. Every once in a while we do “One Saturday Morning” which is a subtle remake of the popularized version in the 90s where everyone eats their favorite sugary cereal and watches cartoons! We love it, and I think it’s definitely going to be featured in our YITL photos. That’s our idea of a fun indoor activity, here are some others to help spark inspiration!
- Baking something together: cookies, banana bread, or Grandma’s recipe
- Snuggling in bed on a Saturday morning
- Working on puzzles or building LEGO sets
- Painting or crafting at the kitchen table
- Bath time and cozy post-bath snuggles
- Wrapping up the day with stories and songs
Home sessions are always full of connection. You don’t have to clean or plan- just be.
Real-Life Outings That Tell a Story

If your family’s routine includes little traditions or weekend outings, those make beautiful memories to document.
- A morning at the farmers market
- Picking apples or pumpkins in season
- An ice cream stop after school
- Exploring a new trail or park
- A quick breakfast out at your favorite local diner
- Mini road trip or scenic drive
- Bowling, skating, or playing at an arcade
It’s not about the activity- it’s about being together. I know you’re wondering, “Wait, do you actually tag along?”, you bet your bottom dollar I do! I am most excited to join your sweet family and participate as a fly on the wall documenting you enjoying your lives together.
The Everyday Mundane (That You’ll Miss Someday)

These ideas might feel too simple to matter. But this is exactly the kind of stuff that becomes precious with time, so that’s why I added them!
- Visiting Grandma and Grandpa
- Running errands as a family
- Grocery store trips, kids pushing the cart
- After-school homework and snack time
- Folding laundry together
- Bedtime routines: pajamas, books, and brushing teeth
- Hanging out on the porch at sunset
Every family has their own rhythms. Capturing them makes for some of the most meaningful photographs!
Let’s Tell Your Story
If you’ve been waiting for a “good reason” to book a session, let this be it: your real life is reason enough. Your kids will never be exactly this age again. Please, please read that and let it sink it. This season of family life is worthy of being remembered, messy, quiet, funny, honest, real, YOU.
Let’s pick a few times over the coming year and create something lasting.
