The twinkle of Christmas lights, the sparkle of freshly fallen snow, and the magic of love—Friday night was nothing short of enchanting as I had the honor of photographing my sister Shi’s proposal to her now-fiancé, Trent. Outside the historic Bluefield Granada Theater, amidst the festive hustle and bustle of holiday cheer, Trent got down on one knee and asked the question that changed their lives forever.
It was a night to remember, and capturing this precious moment will forever be etched in my heart. As a couples and family photographer, I’m used to documenting life’s milestones, but this one was particularly special because it was for my baby sister. All the feels for this big sister!
A Family Affair in Bluefield’s Winter Wonderland
The evening began with a cozy family dinner where we exchanged Christmas gifts, setting the stage for what was to come. The streets of Bluefield, WV, were alive with Christmas endeavors, including children’s performances of The Nutcracker at the theater. The festive atmosphere added to the excitement and joy of the moment. The snow gently falling and the twinkle lights hanging above the street created a dreamy backdrop, perfect for this life-changing moment.
My husband joined as my second shooter for this memorable proposal, while our kids watched their Aunt from a distance, filled with love and excitement.
Side note: Aunt Shi has been there for every big milestone in my children’s lives, from their births to their first steps and beyond. She’s played such an important role in their world, always offering love and support. So, it felt incredibly special for them to be there for one of her big moments, watching with excitement and love as she experienced a milestone of her own. It was a beautiful full-circle moment, having them witness her joy, just as she’s witnessed theirs.
A Proposal Full of Meaning
When the moment arrived, it was quick but profoundly moving. Trent’s thoughtful gesture—proposing in front of the Granada Theater, surrounded by the charm of Christmas—was the perfect reflection of their story. As I snapped photos, my heart swelled with emotion, and tears streamed down my face. My baby sister, all grown up, was stepping into a new chapter of her life.
One of my favorite shots was the ring displayed on a Christmas ornament. It felt like the perfect nod to the season and the significance of the night. The simplicity and beauty of that detail encapsulated the magic of the evening.
Sweet Endings and Bright Beginnings
After the proposal, we strolled through the Christmas lights adorning downtown Bluefield and capped off the night with slices of Key Lime and Peanut Butter pie. The warmth of family, the glow of the holiday lights, and the joy of celebrating Shi and Trent’s engagement made it an unforgettable night.
